Abbie Loy
Born: c.1972
Country: Utopia
Language group: Alyawarre , Eastern Anmatyerre
Abie Loy was born at Utopia Station approximately 270 kilometres north-east of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. She is the granddaughter of one of the leading exponents of contemporary Australian art, Kathleen Petyarre.
Abie Loy has been painting since the early nineties under the formidable guidance of her Grandmother. She paints her Grandfather’s Dreamings such as the Bush Hen Dreaming, for which she holds custodial rights, and also paints Women’s Body Paint and Bush Leaf designs. Over time Loy introduced a bolder, more abstract style in her Sandhills and Body painting series of 2000/2002. These newly evolved paintings are representational of her inherited Dreaming stories, however, these powerful images could be stylistically interpreted as abstract, expressionist and even post-modern.
Abie’s works are held in major collections all over the world and she has been exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally.
