Violet Petyarre was born at Atnagkere Soakage. In 1977 she began producing batik, depicting her Mountain Devil Lizard Dreaming using delicate lines and dots on silk. In 1988, like many Utopia artists, commenced painting on canvas with acrylic paints alongside her sister Kathleen and he Aunt, the late Emily Kame Kngwarreye.
During the 1990s Violet produced a series of paintings which focuses on body paint deigns. These extraordinary paintings reveal a minimalist approach to the iconography of her stories and during this period she was exploring a truly abstract form of expression. Today, Violet remains experimental through her designs and choice of colour.
Violet continues to reinforce her position as one of Australia’s prominent female contemporary artists.
